Care when it counts... Supporting recovery from mental ill health

25% of drugs prescribed on the NHS are for a mental health problem

Healthy Eating

Starting in January 2009, this project is a series of short, sharply focussed, twelve week courses designed to improve the health and well-being of people striving to live independently whilst recovering from mental ill-health.

Through a combination of theory and practical lessons to improve knowledge and understanding of diet and nutrition, participants will learn about the short and long term effects of food on their mental and physical health. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify the key food groups, understand how diet can affect physical and mental health, plan and prepare weekly shopping lists and produce a range of healthy meals suitable for home cooking.

This specialist course will allow participants to focus on how diet can be used to alleviate some of the frequently occurring side effects of prescribed medication and how specific foods can be used to stabilise and improve mental health.
